Iridology, the Hippo Way

Windows to the Soul

The eyes are the windows to the soul. This phrase could not be any more true, when it comes to Iridology.

Iridology is the study and practice of observing and analyzing the unique topographical presentation of the eyes, to provide insight into the internal workings of the human body.

Iridology is an assessment tool that we can use to help guide individuals to optimal health through understanding how their body works and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Easy On-the-Go Coconut Milk Smoothies

Coconut milk is a great base to start any smoothie; from tropical fruits to greens, coconut provides a rich and creamy base and is a great source of essential fatty acids, which help build strong bodies, boost energy and increase metabolism.

Adapt this recipe to suit your needs; use it as a base and get creative with your ingredients! This is a great way to “use-up” fruit and vegetable leftovers, or perhaps you just haven’t gotten around to preparing your fruits.

You will need a good blender, I recommend Vitamix blenders as they are very powerful and can be used to prepare many different dishes, including purees and smooth soups.

To be quick and easy, I recommend using frozen vegetables and fruit, preferably organic, with canned coconut milk for convenience. I use the THAI brand of coconut milk.

Tropical Banana & Mango Smoothie

  • Coconut milk, half a can/cup
  • Banana, one or two medium sized
  • Frozen mangoes, handful or two
  • Half a cup of orange juice (preferably organic) or water

Greens Smoothie

  • Coconut milk, half a can/cup
  • Half a cup of water or fruit juice of your choice
  • Organic spinach, about 2-3 big handfuls worth
  • Half a banana
  • Optional: 1-2 tbsps of chia seeds or your favourite

  • Add liquids to blender first, slowly adding all ingredients into a good blender until smooth.
  • Optionally, sprinkle cinnamon and/or coconut shavings on top.
  • Enjoy.

Clinical Iridology and Hormones

Iridology & Hormones in Nutritional Practice

with Devin Dawson, CNP, CIr

Iridology is a non-invasive, accurate and effective method of health analysis through the observation of the irides and sclera of the eyes by identifying the different colours, markings and iris fibres. These observations reveal locations and stages of inflammation and imbalance in the body, emotional and psychological tendencies, inherent body weaknesses and strengths, and overall body constitution.

To perform an iris analysis, digital photos of the eyes are taken and enlarged on a monitor for you are able to see and discuss with me what can be seen through the eyes.

By identifying areas of weakness and/or imbalance in the body, we can understand the underlying causes for these imbalances and how to best correct them through nutritional means and lifestyle changes, along with other techniques or modalities, including herbal medicine and homeopathy.

Hormones do not only apply to the female menstrual cycle or testosterone in men. When it comes to health, hormones play an important role in all aspects of normal body function from blood sugar control, cravings, mood and energy production, proper reproductive function, digestive function and much more. The simple definition of a hormone is any substance produced by one organ to stimulate or inhibit a distant organ.

Clinical Practice

A significant component of my practice is focused on balancing hormone levels, for they effect every body system. Conditions I work with include diabetes, metabolic syndrome, poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, sexual function, menstrual difficulties or pain and weight management.

Herbal medicine has been used for centuries to treat hormonal imbalances. In fact, there are several herbs that mimic hormones, including vitex agnus-castus, which can stimulate progesterone receptors in the body.

Future Steps

I recommend having your physician assess your hormone levels, especially if this hasn’t been done before. This will give us a baseline to work with, to ensure we can make positive changes.

If you wish to learn more about working with hormone levels naturally using herbal medicines and homeopathy, please don’t wait and get in touch with me today. You can call my office number for more information at (519) 279-6811.

Cupping Massage

Cupping Massage Therapy
Cupping Massage Therapy

Over this past weekend I attended a course in Cupping Massage and am pleased to announce today that I am now offering dry cupping as an additional modality to include in my massage therapy treatments, when requested.

The quickest way I can personally describe Cupping Massage is by referring to a household central vacuum: It feels very similar to sucking your skin with your household vacuum, with the addition of moving it along the skin with lotion or gel. You can imagine how it may feel and understand how it can be such a deep technique without much physical pressure.

Schmidt Raw Milk Debate Continues

If you’ve not heard of Michael Schmidt yet, you should have by now. He is an Ontario farmer, raised in Germany. He practices biodynamic farming (which essentially is a sustainable method of organic farming). Michael Schmidt is a raw milk advocate and has been providing parts of Ontario with organic, raw unpasteurized milk.

Michael Schmidt has been in a battle with the government over the sale of raw milk for quite some time, and more recently over the herd share program he was running, where members of the community could share ownership of an individual cow.

In Germany and Europe (all 27 countries in the European Union), the sale of raw milk is legal. Unfortunately, here in Canada (and Australia), raw milk sales are illegal. There is no law however to drinking raw unpasteurized milk, as Mr. Schmidt explains in the video below.

Here is the short clip of The Morning Show with Michael Schmidt, August 18, 2014.

Morning Show guest Michael Schmidt

We encourage you to follow him on facebook and to review his blog as well.

If you need more detailed information about Mr. Michael Schmidt’s case, please review this page here; it contains many more links to various news websites and articles.

Later on we’ll discuss the benefits and describe the perceived dangers of consuming raw milk.

We want you hear your feedback on the raw milk debate in Ontario. Comment below or email us directly!
